What is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private insurance companies and must cover the same benefits as Medicare Parts A & B. Many Medicare Advantage plans may offer low copayments and cover benefits and services not covered by Medicare Parts A & B.

Some plans may also include prescription drug coverage. These plans are referred to as Medicare Advantage with Prescription Drug (MAPD) coverage.

We’ll show all Medicare plans in your area with just a ZIP code.

What are the Different Types of Medicare Advantage Plans?

  • Medicare Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs)
  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO)
  • Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS)
  • Medicare Special Needs Plans (SNP)

A specific Medicare Advantage plan’s service area determines who is eligible to enroll in that specific plan. Aside from Special Needs Plans, which can be limited in their enrollment of certain group of beneficiaries, plans are required to allow all eligible Medicare beneficiaries residing in a plan’s service area to enroll.

Are you eligible for Medicare Advantage?

Once you have Medicare Parts A & B, you typically will be eligible to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. You must choose a Medicare Advantage plan in your service area.

When can you enroll in Medicare Advantage Plans?

If you want to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, there are certain time periods when you can do so:

October 15 to December 7

  • Change from Medicare Parts A & B to a Medicare Advantage plan
  • Change Medicare Advantage plans
  • Find a new Medicare Advantage plan that offers prescription drug coverage

Your 65th Birthday

When you first become eligible for Medicare, you have the option to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. This is called your Initial Coverage Election Period, and it is the seven-month period that runs from 3 months before the month of your 65th birthday through 3 months after your birthday month.

January 1 to February 14

Change your mind about Medicare Advantage? If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan but want to switch back to Medicare Parts A & B, you can do so during this time period.
